Research Requests
Assistant Lighthouse Keeper Thomas Martin (left) and Head Keeper Thomas Armstrong (right) are seen painting the East Pierhead Lighthouse from a buff color to white in 1917.
The back of the postcard, dated May 4, 1917, reads: 'Your welcome letter found us all well; hope you are the same. Lottie (Tom Martin's wife) left this morning for Muskegon and expects to be gone about two weeks. We're busy now with the outside painting. Quite a rig we have—beats the old ladder method! We're painting the signal white this year. They should draft all married men first in this war since they're used to fighting.'"
